STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:  To educate children (ages birth to three), who are blind or visually impaired (and who may also have additional disabilities), and their parents in a home-based and center-based, 12 month program.

TRAVEL REQUIRED:  Chicago and suburbs.

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES: • Provides weekly (or another appropriate schedule as planned) visits with the child and its family to offer evaluation, instruction and support. • Provides formal assessments of the developmental level of children enrolled in or referred to the program. • Collaborates with other staff members and therapists to plan individual educational programs for enrolled children. • Makes observations and write reports for the permanent file regarding each child’s behavior and development. • Informs and advises parents regarding medical policies and procedures to meet the needs of the children; assists with appropriate referrals as necessary. • Provides information to parents about resources that could be helpful to the family, e.g. respite care, public aid, Department of Education, etc. • Assists parents with appropriate referrals at age three. • Maintains appropriate records in accordance with agency funding sources. • Remains current with practices and advances in the field through participation in related seminars, conferences, and in-services. • Develop and provide instruction for enrichment programing for children 3-6 years of age at The Chicago Lighthouse Glenview. • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS • Bachelor’s degree in Special Educational (Illinois LBS 1 Certification). • State of Illinois Early Intervention credential, required with endorsement in blind/visual impairment. • Ability to travel within diverse populations from client to client; bilingual candidate in Spanish/English preferred. • One year experience in responsible, self-motivated setting preferred. • Commitment to our mission of providing opportunities for people who are blind, visually impaired, deaf-blind, or multi-disabled is essential.
